Overview of the Global Situation
According to the UNHCR's 'Mid Year Report 2021,' for the first time, there are over 80 million displaced people worldwide. The pandemic significantly worsened the situation for refugees in 2020.

At the beginning of this year, there were approximately 79.5 million people displaced due to persecution, conflict, and human rights abuses. Of these, 45.7 million were internally displaced persons, meaning people who are displaced within their own countries.

There were 29.6 million refugees and displaced persons outside their countries of origin, as well as 4.2 million asylum seekers. 40% of the displaced people worldwide are children under the age of 18.

The Armed Conflict Survey, published annually by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research (HIIK), provides an overview of wars and armed conflicts that occurred in the previous year. According to this research institution, there were 22 wars and 6 so-called armed conflicts worldwide in 2021.
